Ministry of Shipping in India has proposed to develop ferry service between India and Sri Lanka. The service will include the development of ferry service between Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry, India, and Jaffna in Sri Lanka. The distance covered in the service will be 56 nautical miles (103.7 kilometers). The project is planned to be procured on Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
The ferry service will boost tourism and will provide a better connection for pilgrims. The one-way trip of the ferry is expected to take about three hours. Karaikal Port will be the facilitator for the service and the central government of India would extend support for the project.
