The Government of Mexico has announced plans to develop a new international airport at Tulum in Quintana Roo to boost the economy in the area. The airport will have capacity to handle approximately four million passengers per year. The new airport will be connected to the Mayan train network's section from Tulum to Escárcega, which provides a passage from Palenque to the Gulf.

CFE and Fonatur have also agreed to upgrade and provide a connection to the line going through the airport. The airport will have an overpass train line access to the passenger terminal.
