The Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) has awarded a concession to manage, operate, and administer the new Felipe Ángeles International Airport to Sedena - Mexican Secretariat of National Defense. Apart from operation and maintenance of the airport infrastructure, Sedena will also manage the International Training Center of Airports and Auxiliary Services of SCT, 42 courses, and workshops.

Spread in 3000 hectares, International Airport will have two 3.5 km and 2.5 km long runways, a control tower, passenger and cargo terminals, a 310-room hotel, parking lots, a bus terminal, and 1,300 housing units for staff among other facilities. The airport is located at a site of Santa Lucía military airbase approximately 50 km north of Mexico City.

The construction works for the airport are already underway. Almost 67% of the infrastructure has been erected. Sedena expects to complete the construction works by March 21, 2022. This US$4.17 billion airport will serve as an alternative to unfinished Nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional de México (NAIM). Once operational, the airport will have the capacity to handle 19.5 million passengers per year.
