Meridiam and its partner Strabag, commissioned the new A49 motorway located in the German State of Hesse, northeast of Frankfurt.
The A49 motorway project in Germany is a 30-year concession valued at approximately EUR 1 billion (US$ 1.09 billion). Developed under an availability-based public-private partnership (PPP) model, it serves as a vital link along Germany’s key north–south transport corridor. The initiative was led by the federal government through Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, with DEGES overseeing planning and construction.
Stretching over 61 km in total length, 31 of which have been completely newly built, A49 now provides an improved road connection between the regional centres of Kassel and Frankfurt. The construction of the A49 motorway involved the recycling and repurposing of approximately 2.6 million cubic meters of excavated material. In areas where the route intersects water protection zones, over 120,000 square meters of synthetic membrane were used to seal the entire motorway and rainwater retention basins. Further efforts to safeguard the environment and support nearby communities included dust suppression methods, such as the use of water trucks, as well as adjustments to the construction timeline and the integration of local road connections to enhance traffic flow in surrounding areas.
