Worthing Borough Council has launched a project to roll out infrastructure that will offer climate-friendly heating to all its homes and buildings in Worthing, West Sussex, UK.

Hemiko, a developer and operator of heat networks, will start building its GBP 500 million (US$ 636 million) piped heat project in July 2024. The Heat Networks Investment Project of the federal government provides GBP 7 million (US$ 8.9 million) of such money. The first phase of the network is anticipated to link Worthing's Town Hall, hospital, Assembly Hall, museum, Connaught Theatre, and Portland House by the summer of 2025. Supporters of the plan estimate that the first phase will save more than 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is the same as removing 2,000 automobiles from the road. Air-supplied heat pumps at the network Energy Centre will serve as the network's first driver. Over time, more locally available but underutilized heat sources will be brought in.

Law firm Burges Salmon advised the borough on the design & ownership of the planned network.
