The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has selected AECOM as lead designer for the Lone Star Constructors joint venture to manage the design, delivery and maintenance of the Interstate 35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) South Project in Bexar County, Texas, USA.
The project encompasses a four-mile stretch of I-35, running from I-410 South to I-410 North, with a focus on alleviating congestion and enhancing safety, accessibility, and operational efficiency. AECOM will be responsible for designing and delivering three elevated express lanes in each direction, comprising two elevated general-purpose lanes and one HOV lane. This work will also involve the construction of direct connectors at the I-410 South interchange and the connection to elevated lanes, along with direct connectors at the I-410 North interchange, which is currently in progress.
The I-35 NEX South Project represents the second phase of the larger three-part I-35 NEX project, set to extend approximately 19.5 miles from I-410 South to San Antonio's FM 1103. Upon its completion, the full project will introduce elevated and additional lanes to the highway, aiming to enhance mobility, alleviate congestion, and support the economic development and growth in the region.
