The planning process has begun for Stage 4 of the Gold Coast Light Rail project, which will connect Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta via the Gold Coast Airport in Australia.
The 13 km-long southern extension of the light rail project will service such cultural and urban attractions as the Burleigh Head National Park, Palm Beach Village Centre, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Southern Cross University, Gold Coast Airport, and Coolangatta shopping and business precinct.
The preliminary business case for the rail line and the Gold Coast Highway (Tugun to Coolangatta) Multi-modal Corridor Study are underway and expected to be complete by mid-2022. The Queensland Government has committed AUD1.5 million (US$1.12 million) to undertake the transport planning study (Tugun to Coolangatta) and AUD5 million (US$3.74 million) as a joint state and council funding has been committed to undertake a preliminary business case for light rail planning.
