Lae Port Container Terminal Expansion Project Successfully Completed

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced the completion of the development of the Lae port facilities component, consisting of a tidal basin, one berth, and a container terminal in Papua New Guinea.

The project scope had three main components:

  • port facility improvements, consisting of the construction of a tidal basin (700 x 400 m) northwest of the present port facilities with a dredged depth of 14 m below chart data to accommodate vessels with an overall length of 200 m, a beam of 32.2 m, and a fully laden draft of 12 m;
  • construction of a multipurpose berth, 240 m long and 45 m–50 m wide;
  • terminal works, including all buildings, storage areas, roads, drainage, water, electricity, and sewerage services; and
  • development of an alternative small-craft landing site.
