Selu Limited, a special-purpose vehicle, has committed to investing approximately KES12.5 billion (US$95 million) into Kenya's Galana-Kulalu irrigation project.
Under this agreement, Selu Limited has been allocated 20,000 acres within the Galana-Kulalu scheme, aiming to produce 720,000 bags of maize and 160,000 bags of soybeans annually over the next 30 years. Launched in 2013 with an initial budget of KES 9 billion (US$ 69 million), the Galana-Kulalu Food Security Project was part of the Jubilee Government's "Big 4" agenda to achieve food security. However, the project faced challenges, including a notable fallout with Israeli contractor Green Arava in 2020 over payment disputes, despite substantial groundwork completed on a 10,000-acre model farm.
In 2023, the government opened the multi-billion-dollar irrigation scheme to private investors, with agri-tech firm Twiga Foods being among the first beneficiaries, securing 20,000 acres. Twiga Foods' pilot phase achieved record-breaking maize yields of up to 35 bags per acre, quadrupling the national average.
