The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the Government of the State of Paraíba have signed a contract to carry out studies focused on structuring a project that will allow the expansion of water supply and sewage in 93 municipalities in the state. The project's execution is expected to increase water supply coverage by 22% and sewage coverage by 54%. As a result, treated water will reach 2.26 million people and depletion will reach 2.06 million. Currently, most cities are served by the Water and Sewage Company of Paraíba (CAGEPA).

The project will be structured around the main lines of universalizing the service in the shortest time possible and maximizing the number of municipalities and people served. At the moment, 25% of the population of Paraíba does not have access to treated water and 65% to sewage collection.

The Government of Paraíba initially has included 93 out of the 223 municipalities in the project, which are split into two blocks. The first contains the micro-region Alto Piranhas, in the hinterland and comprises 38 municipalities with 444,278 inhabitants. The second block has the Litoral micro-region, around João Pessoa, comprising 55 municipalities with 1,844,817 inhabitants.
