India mulls re-tendering Zoji La tunnel

The Government of India mulls re-bidding for the Zojila Tunnel project if the initially awarded company, Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services, fails to undertake the construction of the major infrastructure scheme.

The road and highways ministry is concerned that IL&FS cannot complete the project as schedule due to its recent financial crisis. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation is handling the project on behalf of the ministry. The ministry has suggested that a joint mechanism be formed to see what can be done with national highway projects.

The Zojila pass was first announced during the UPA-II government. The NDA government then awarded the construction work to IRB Infrastructure in 2016, but the tender was scrapped and the government decided to build the project on the engineering, procurement and construction model, for which the tender was won by an IL&FS subsidiary. The original project completion deadline was 2025.
