India launches new model concession for medical colleges

Niti Aayog in India has launched a public-private partnership model concession method to link new or existing private medical colleges with functional district hospitals to augment medical seats. Niti Aayog is a policy think tank of the Government of India, established with the aim to achieve sustainable development goals. Niti Aayog replaced the previous five-year plan office in India.

The 'Model Concession Agreement for Setting Up Medical Colleges Under the Public-Private Partnership' is a guideline document developed based on international best practices and similar ongoing projects in the state of Gujarat and Kerala. India has a shortage of medical doctors, to fill the gap the government is planning to increase the educational institutes in India.

Under this model concession, a concessionaire will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the medical college and also upgrade, operate and maintain the associated district hospital with a minimum annual student intake of 150 MBBS seats.
