Swiss engineers Frutiger and Implenia have won a contract worth US$477 million for work on the Sisikon Tunnel, which will form part of the Axenstrasse road along the shores of Lake Uri and Lake Lucerne.

The cantons of Schwyz and Uri have granted the contract for lot 200 of the "Neue Axenstrasse" project, specifically the "Sisikon Tunnel," to a joint venture (JV) comprising Implenia and Frutiger (Implenia holding 60% and Frutiger 40%). This contract involves constructing a 4.4 km single-tube, two-way road tunnel, which the JV will excavate through the rock. Additionally, the JV will build various other underground structures, including access tunnels, passing places, ventilation hubs, and exhaust ducts.

In addition to tunneling, various external works are being handled by other Implenia civil engineering units, including building a large gallery for natural hazard protection. The construction projects will generate around 2 million tons of excavated material, most of which will be transported by boat to a major renaturation project on the Reuss Delta in Flüelen. Construction for this lot is set to begin in mid-2025, with completion expected by 2034.
