UK's prime minister's candidate Mr. Boris Johnson has indicated to scrap the ambitious High Speed 2 rail project if he became the PM. According to him, the GBP 56 billion (US$ 70.44 billion) project is a weak business case and the delivery company is deeply disorganized. The government is yet to make a decision on operator company selection. Such delays are casting further doubts for the future of the project.
Prime Minister candidate Mr. Johnson has ordered a further review of the project scheme, which will be delivered by the former chairman of the HS2 project in December 2019. Foreign Secretary of the UK also cast doubt on projects value for money and suggested the investment be switched to HS3 or Northen Powerhouse Rail project.
HS2 is a planned high-speed railway that will initially link the cities of London and Birmingham, followed by further extension to North West England and Yorkshire. In the second phase, the line will connect Crewe to Manchester and West Midlands to Leeds.
