The state of Hawaii in the USA has introduced House Bill 1950 for an underwater tunnel project which will connect West Oahu and Downtown Honolulu. The bill will require the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) to complete the feasibility study for the project.
The tunnel is planned to be procured on design, build, and operate private-partnership mode. The tunnel will offer a direct connection between regional areas of Hawaii and will increase the transportation capacity of the road. The population growth is expected to increase rapidly due to new houses being built in Leeward and West Oahu.
The bill is waiting for the approval of the finance committee. After approval, the bill will fund the HDOT to conduct the feasibility study for the project.
