The Government of Guatemala has signed a railway network rehabilitation concession contract with Remed, a subsidiary of Stella Holdings. The company will be responsible for the redevelopment of a 250 km long cargo railway track network that runs across the country and provides a connection with Mexico.
The estimated contract value is US$700 million with a concession period of 26 years. The railway network has been unused for several decades now. A legal appeal has also been filed against the contract on grounds of negligence and lack of transparency.
