The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has given a go-ahead to the All-Weather Deep Draft Greenfield Vadhavan Mega Port located approximately 150 km north of Mumbai in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, India.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) intends to develop this initiative with a capacity of 254 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), including 9.87 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in collaboration with the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) through a dedicated entity known as a special purpose vehicle (SPV). The anticipated overall cost of the new port project is INR 738 billion (US$ 9 billion). Within this budget, the SPV will allocate INR 161 billion (US$ 2 billion) for the implementation of essential infrastructure components such as breakwaters, rail lines, yards, road connectivity, power and waterline facilities, internal roads, and common amenities. JNPT will hold the majority equity share at 74%, with the MMB holding the remaining 26%. The central government has initiated the acquisition of land for constructing a 32 km long greenfield highway connecting the Vadhavan Port, with approximately 571 ha of land earmarked for this purpose.
