Brazil’s National Land Transport Agency has approved a proposal to retender a 232 km stretch of the BR-040 highway between Belo Horizonte and Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais state.
The primary tasks under the 30-year agreement involve the transformation of 164 km into a dual carriageway, the construction of 42 km of additional lanes, and the establishment of 15 km of auxiliary roads. The anticipated investment throughout the contract's duration amounts to BRL 9 billion (US$1.83 billion). BR-040 traverses the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Goiás, along with the capital Brasília, and is currently managed by Concessionária BR-040, a subsidiary of infrastructure company Invepar.
To attract interest in the new contract, the government has divided the initial concession into three segments, including Belo Horizonte-Juiz de Fora. The other two segments consist of the 482 km stretch between Juiz de Fora and Rio de Janeiro and the 595 km Rota dos Cristais connection between Belo Horizonte and Cristalina in Goiás.
