The Ministry of Transportation, through the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI), has launched Functional Unit 2 (UF2) of the Pacific Connection Highway 1 project, which includes 13.20 km of dual carriageway between the Titiribí and Camilo Cé interchanges, as well as the 3.60 km Amagá tunnel.
The commissioning of this UF2 also allows for the entry into operation of Functional Unit 3, which corresponds to the left tube of the Amagá tunnel, and the connection to the works in operation of UF4. This UF2 was 90.70% complete in August 2022 and was 100% complete by February 2025. The Pacífico 1 project has opened over 13 km of dual carriageway, including a tunnel spanning more than 3 km. This infrastructure will help producers in Caldas and Antioquia cut down travel times and costs when transporting goods to Pereira, Cali, and, most notably, the port of Buenaventura. The project is crucial as it improves connectivity, reducing transit times for producers, transporters, and merchants moving products across southwestern, central, and northern Colombia.
The Pacific Connection Highway 1 is part of the fourth-generation (4G) highways that connect southwestern Antioquia, from Medellín through the municipalities of Amagá, Titiribí, Venecia, and Caldas, to Pereira, creating an important connection between Chocó and the ports of Buenaventura. It also connects the north of the country, including the departments of Magdalena, Atlántico, Bolívar, Córdoba, Sucre, and Antioquia, facilitating trade, tourism, and the local and international economy. The project, divided into four functional units spanning 50.10 km, includes the construction of 63 bridges, three interchanges in Sinifaná, Titiribí, and Camilo Cé; 32.10 km of dual carriageway construction; and the construction of two dual tunnels. To date, its completion rate is 96.78%.
