The government of the UK has invested GBP3 million (US$4.18 million) to kick-start the hydrogen transport hub PPP project in Teeside, UK.
The project will focus on research, testing and trials across different modes of transport. By creating real-world hydrogen transport pilots, it will help to understand the role of hydrogen as part of the energy transition in the transport sector. Pop-up trials could see local shops, supermarkets and delivery companies use hydrogen-powered transport for moving goods. In addition, local transport operators may work together with the hub to deliver hydrogen passenger services, such as regional buses and refuse vehicles.
The hub is expected to be fully operational by 2025, helping to create up to 5,000 new jobs in the north-east over the long-term.
