The joint-venture of GEK Terna Group and GMR Group is set to begin preparatory works for the construction of the New Heraklion International Airport in March 2019.
The consortium was awarded a 35-year concession contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the new airport in September 2018. The award was ratified by the Greek Court of Auditors in December, permitting the commencement of construction, though the Greek Parliament is still yet to ratify it.
Replacing the existing Nikos Kazantzakis Airport at Heraklion, the new airport will be situated to the south-west of the Hellenic Air Force Base of Kastellia and will feature a 3.2km runway. Construction is expected to take five years.
