The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has approved the allocation of US$100 million to Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) for the second phase of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Phase II project.
This is the second funding allocation to VTA under the EPD Pilot Program. FTA previously announced a US$125 million funding allocation to VTA in August 2019. With this announcement, FTA has allocated a total of US$225 million to VTA for the project.
The total estimated project cost is US$6.86 billion and VTA has requested US$1.715 billion in federal funding through FTA's Pilot Program. FTA's Expedited Project Delivery Pilot Program is a discretionary program aimed at expediting delivery of new transit infrastructure projects that utilize public-private partnerships, are planned to be operated and maintained by employees of an existing public transportation provider, and have a federal share not exceeding 25 percent of the project cost. The funding allocations will be awarded to VTA when the project has met all program requirements needed to proceed to a construction grant agreement.
Phase II of the BART project involves a six-mile, four-station extension that will expand BART operations from Berryessa/North San Jose through downtown San Jose to the City of Santa Clara. This phase will also include an approximately five-mile tunnel, two mid-tunnel ventilation facilities, a maintenance facility and storage yard, three underground stations (Alum Rock/28th Street, Downtown San Jose, Diridon), and one at-grade station (Santa Clara). The subway tunnel will be in a single-bore configuration.
