The French Development Agency (AFD) has agreed to provide EUR79 million (US$85 million) in funding to the Rwandan government to support the redevelopment of the Ruhengeri referral hospital in the Musanze district in northwestern Rwanda.
The renovation initiative aims to expand the hospital's capacity from 320 beds to 550. It involves replacing all existing buildings except for the laboratory. Additionally, the project will introduce new services, including intensive care and diagnostic facilities such as CT scanners, MRI, and electrocardiograms. The goal is to minimize the necessity for patients to travel to the capital for treatment.
AFD will offer a concessional loan of EUR75 million (USD80.5 million) along with a EUR4 million (USD4.2 million) grant, part of which will be designated for healthcare personnel training. The project, set to span four years, involves the refurbishment of a hospital established in 1939, which serves as a referral center for six adjacent districts.
