The transportation ministry has announced that four bidders are interested in an auction for the PHP 170.6 billion (US$3 billion) upgrade of its aging Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in the Philippines.
The Manila International Airport Consortium, Asian Airport Consortium, GMR Airports Consortium, and SMC SAP & Co Consortium are among the firms that submitted bids. The transportation ministry anticipates granting the 15-year concession, extendable by an additional 10 years, in Q1. Despite its designed capacity of 32 million passengers, NAIA recorded a peak of 48 million passengers in 2019. The enhanced airport seeks to accommodate a minimum of 60 million passengers annually, up from the current 35 million. Previous efforts to modernize the airport faced setbacks due to disputes involving airport authorities, contractors, and potential bidders.
