A joint venture between Fluor and Austin Bridge and Road has broken ground on the first phase of the Interstate 35 (I-35) Northeast Expansion South in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

The Lone Star Constructors team secured a US$700 million contract from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in 2023. Their task is to construct three elevated lanes in each direction along I-35, stretching from the I-35/I-410 South interchange to the I-35/I-410 North interchange. This is part of the larger I-35 NEX project, a 20-mile expansion divided into five segments. The US$1.5 billion I-35 NEX Central project commenced in 2022, while the other segments are still in the design phase.

The first phase of the I-35 NEX South project will see the addition of two main lanes and one high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction. Additionally, the project includes a five-year capital maintenance period, with the possibility of two five-year extensions. The I-35 corridor, which currently handles 150,000 vehicles daily, is expected to have substantial completion by early 2028.
