Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation has signed a US$460 million development financing agreement with the Embassy of South Korea for supplying 40 train units (320 railcars) to the Cairo Metro’s Line 2 and Line 3.
The funding for the project will be supplied by the Korean Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), which is associated with the Export-Import Bank of Korea (Korea Eximbank). The project's primary objective is to promote the localization of Egypt's railway industry and railway traction units. This will be accomplished through collaboration between the National Egyptian Railway Industries Company (NERIC) and "Hyundai Rotem" within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE).
Line 2 stretches from Shubra El-Kheima in the northern part of Cairo to Cairo University in Giza, passing through various important areas and landmarks, such as Sadat, Ataba, and Mohandiseen. Line 3 runs from Cairo International Airport in the northeastern part of the city to Cairo Stadium in Nasr City.
