Ferrovial has announced the opening of US$3.7 billion I-66 road HOT lanes in late November 2022 in Virginia, the USA.
I-66 runs along a corridor between Route 29, in the environs of Gainesville, and I-495, the Capital Beltway, in Fairfax County. The 36 km project includes the installation of sensors and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications systems for detecting and reporting situations of risk to traffic in real-time. The project is to reduce congestion on a busy main artery by creating toll lanes with dynamic toll collection. Cintra will operate and maintain the road under a 50-year concession. Ferrovial owns 55.7% of the concessionaire, Meridiam 29.7% and APG 14.5%.
The road was designed and built by Ferrovial Construction and local company Allan Myers. The construction required 44.5 million cubic m of concrete, 29 thousand tons of steel, 3.1 million tons of asphalt and 300 pieces of heavy equipment.
