The joint venture of Ferrovial and Portuguese contractor Alberto Couto Alves has finished the EUR 99 million (US$ 107 million) extension of Porto Metro’s Yellow Line.
A new 3.15-km section of light metro will extend the Yellow line from Santo Ovídio station to the southern parts of the city, serving the districts of Vila Nova de Gaia, Mafamude e Vilar do Paraiso, Oliveira do Douro, and Vilar do Andorinho. This project includes the construction of a viaduct, a 770-m tunnel, and three new stations. The viaduct between Santo Ovídio and Manuel Leão stations features a metal lattice structure on piers up to 22 m high, forming a 420-m long curve. Due to the difficulty of using ground-based cranes, the 2,746-tonne structure was slid into place from one end. Its assembly took 143 days of continuous work.
