The Government of Brazil and the Government of the State of Santa Catarina are planning to start feasibility studies for its concession of highways project in the second half of 2021. The evaluation will include the proposed sections of up to 2,500 kilometers, of which 1,700 are federal and 780 are state-owned. The extension corresponds to about 15% of the state's road network (federal and state).
The decision to study the joint concession for the highways in Santa Catarina was taken based on the initial technical analysis, which underlined two difficulties to organize road concession by traditional way, section by section. The first challenge is the high value of an investment in works needed for the expansion and duplication of highways, due to many valleys and mountains. The second reason is that many points of toll leakage were identified, mainly local roads.
The planning and Logistics Company (EPL) in partnership with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will be responsible for conducting and analyzing the studies, which are expected to be completed by August 2021. The Santa Catarina highway project is estimated to auction in 2023.
