The Ministry of Public Works and Communications of Paraguay has presented the results of the technical feasibility study for the Cercanía commuter rain project in the Central Department. With this, the process is advanced and an important step is taken towards the call for bids that is expected to be carried out this year, within the framework of a Public-Private Alliance (PPP) and with an initial investment of USD 300 million.
The Feasibility Study of the Commuter Train was prepared by the Korean company Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND), an institution under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation of Korea (MOLIT).
The project involves the development of a commuter train with a speed of 30 km/h, connecting Asunción and Ypacaraí cities. The electric rail transport will be integrated into the public transport system through electronic ticketing. The first phase of the project will be built between the Central Station and Luque and will use the domain strip and stations of the old historic Carlos Antonio López railway.
In addition, the possibility of the trains ending their journey at the Station located on Av. Artigas and Peru is already being considered, from where electric buses will bring passengers towards the Government Offices in the port area.
The head of the MOPC Arnoldo Wiens, together with the Asian experts, signed a cooperation agreement between the two governments that will give support and continuity to this project.
