The European Commission has raised concerns about the acquisition of Inmarsat by Viasat.
According to the preliminary investigation of the Commission, the parties are close competitors in the global markets for the supply of broadband in-flight connectivity (IFC) services to commercial airlines. In tenders for IFC contracts, particularly in the EEA, the parties face off against one another. The Commission is worried that Viasat's acquisition of Inmarsat may result in less competition for commercial airlines operating in the EEA and/or around the world to access broadband IFC services. The markets are characterized by relatively high barriers to entry, such as regulatory and technological and there are currently few alternative suppliers.
The proposed transaction was notified to the Commission on 9 January 2023.
