Ministry of Transport in Ethiopia has announced plans to connect Berbera Port located in Somaliland to the Ethio-Djibouti Railway network. The project will have an approximate 310 km length, covering the distance between Berbera Port and Ayisha, which is connected to the Standard Gauge railway network. Out of 310 km of the line, 250 km falls under Somaliland territory while the remaining 60 km of the line is within Ethiopia.
This initiative named as 'port to port connection project' is expected to be implemented under a 10-year development plan and on a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The estimated investment value of the project is around US$ 1.5 billion. The aim of the project is to open alternative sea access and important international railway corridors.
