The largest private sector energy company in Brazil ENGIE made a successful bid in the Private Public Partnership (PPP) auction for street lighting in the municipality of Petrolina (PE) worth BRL300 million (USD58.8 million).
ENGIE presented a proposal with a monthly tariff of R$ 409,200.00 (USD 80,170), 67.6% less than the tariff ceiling established in the invitation to bid. The agreement will run for a 20-year period and provides for the modernization, expansion, and maintenance of the city’s lighting infrastructure to the benefit of a population of approximately 350 thousand people. A significant investment is forecast to modernize all existing lighting units with LED technology as well as implementing an operational control center and management systems in order to achieve savings of at least 50% in the energy consumed by the city’s public lighting system.
Petrolina’s Public Lighting PPP project has been structured with the support of the Brazilian Development Bank (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico Social – BNDES).
In addition to the infrastructure, ENGIE is to install smart operational and remote monitoring systems for lighting the city’s more important streets. Another key element in the project is the flood lighting of monuments and tourist attractions of Petrolina, a city situated on the banks of the São Francisco River.
