The Reading Borough Council has announced the development partner to transform the Minster Quarter Central site in the UK.
The plan comprises the construction of more than 600 residences, with 30% designated as affordable housing available through various arrangements, encompassing both affordable social rent and affordable private rent. Additionally, there will be 40,000 sq m of new commercial space, featuring offices, retail outlets, dining establishments, and a 102-bed hotel. The initiative also entails the development of high-quality public areas, including the introduction of 'Hexagon Square,' conceived as an expansive, functional, and aesthetically pleasing civic space. This square is designed as an entrance point to Reading's renowned Hexagon Theatre and the new Studio Theatre.
The overarching goal is to establish a thriving mixed-use community, fostering a positive streetscape and providing inviting spaces for shopping, dining, and enjoying Reading's vibrant arts and culture scene. The current plans include relocating the Charter Market on Hosier Street and enhancing its surroundings with new public spaces around the landmark Reading Minster. Proposals also involve the revitalization of Dusseldorf Way, creating a significant new boulevard with additional street trees and seating areas.
