Democratic Republic of Congo to rebuild multimillion Rail transit system

The government of Democratic Republic of Congo has announced that Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) entered into a joint development agreement with Trans Connexion Congo (TCC), to develop a mass transit system covering a linear route of 300-km of railroad in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The project will be implemented in 4 stages. The first will upgrade the existing 25-km system between Kinshasa Central Station and N'djili International Airport. The upgrade will include the complete replacement of the existing rail tracks. The project will help offload transport systems, as the current system satisfies only 47% of daily transport demand. The upgraded rail system will help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the city, improve mobility and accessibility by significantly reducing travel time between the suburbs and the city center, further improving economic efficiency.

AFC made an initial investment of US$3 million in pre-construction with the goal of achieving financial close as early as Q4, 2023.
