The Webuild group has delivered the first section of the railway doubling between the stations of Catania Bicocca and Catenanuova, built in Sicily, Italy.
The overall project, now 83% complete, aims to safely increase the number of transiting trains, reduce travel times, and promote sustainable mobility over road transport. Upon completion, the line's capacity will increase, allowing trains to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, compared to the current 100 km/h, which drops to 80-90 km/h in some sections. Travel times will improve from 25 to 17 minutes. The 11.5-km-long section was completed according to the accelerated work plan signed with RFI in June 2023, which aims to advance the railway doubling completion from February 2026 to February 2025. The activation of this section, the first along the Palermo-Catania-Messina route, will enable full use of the double track over approximately 38 km, connecting Catenanuova station in Enna province to Catania "Bicocca" station.
The completed section includes complex works, featuring 9 of the 17 railway viaducts along the entire lot, and the removal of all level crossings to ensure safer road mobility. Ongoing works involve laying a double track in two sections: Sferro to Motta Sant'Anastasia (approximately 16 km) and Motta Sant'Anastasia to Bicocca (approximately 10.5 km). In Sicily, Webuild Group is engaged in 8 projects, including 7 railway sections along the Palermo-Catania-Messina high-speed route and a segment for the Ragusana motorway connecting Ragusa to Catania. These projects, part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the TEN-T network, will provide Sicily with modern transport infrastructure.
