The Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has agreed to the capacity upgrade from Dar es Salaam to Chalinze Expressway.

The project involves the rehabilitation and upgrading of the entire 197 km of road, which would establish Tanzania's first toll road. The initial 100 km will feature 6 lanes, while the remaining sections will have 4 lanes. To provide drivers with options, the project necessitates the construction of a new road adjacent to the existing one. This allows drivers to choose between utilizing the existing road or opting for a superior toll road built to expressway standards. The project encompasses the construction of both 4 and 6-lane carriageways, 8 interchanges, 7 toll plazas, weighbridges, and several bridges. The implementation of a new toll road with a design speed of 120 km/hr aims to mitigate congestion and address related problems.
