CPB Contractors has built Stage 1 of Sydney’s Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) with the completion of a triple-lane road tunnel between Rozelle and Birchgrove.
Tunneling work commenced in mid-2021 as part of a joint venture for Transport for NSW. So far, crews have excavated approximately 8.5 km of tunnels, including a 2.6 km network of cross passages, temporary tunnels, ventilation caverns, and substations. The work involved excavating a million bank cubic metres of spoil to create tunnel crossings above Rozelle Interchange and Sydney Metro West without disruptions. The JV built two underground ventilation caverns 19m wide, 42m long, and 25m high, and installed 105,000 rock bolts ranging from 1.2 metres to 9.0 metres in length. Stage 1 of the WHT project involves excavating and lining the Western Harbour Tunnel, including ventilation tunnels and substations between Rozelle Interchange and Cove St, Birchgrove.
CPB Contractors is part of the Rail Network alliance delivering works for the Metro Tunnel Project. Works here include the design, supply, installation, testing, integration and commissioning activities for train and power control systems, operational control systems, and conventional and high-capacity signalling on the new Sunbury to Cranbourne/Pakenham line.
