The Government of Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Railway Institute (Incofer) have announced the cancellation of the Rapid Passenger Train (RPT) project initiated by the previous government, commenting on it as economically not feasible.
Instead, the Incofer is proposing a new project that will use an elevated train system to cover the San José Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM). The new proposal will be based on a 2016 pre-feasibility study, financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI).
CABEI stated that it will continue supporting Costa Rica in the development of sustainable and efficient transportation, including its technical support and the adjustment of the US$550 million sovereign guaranteed loan that was approved for the RPT project in 2019.
