The Irish Prime Minister has stated this week that the development of the proposed M20 motorway between Cork and Limerick is "full steam ahead". Furthermore, at a Cabinet Committee meeting, the Prime Minister stated that he anticipates that the project will be structured as a public-private partnership (PPP).
The M20 would replace the current N20 national road linking the two cities, located in south-west Ireland, spanning approximately 80km. It would be the first major transport conduit in Ireland not to terminate in Dublin.
The project has been cancelled and reactivated many times but in 2018 it was included in the new National Development Plan. Limerick City and County Council published a contract notice seeking design consultants in April last year, anticipating the commencement of commercial operations in 2027.
