Contract awarded to improve Grand Central-42nd Street Station in New York

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has selected Skanska to improve circulation at Grand Central-42nd Street Station in New York, USA.

Skanska is responsible for the upgradation of the station’s existing structures and systems:

  • The construction of a newly mined tunnel passageway;
  • The creation of new stairways and the widening of the stairways already in existence throughout the station;
  • upgradation to the station’s fire alarm system; and
  • Core tunnel repairs to the existing tunnelways within the station.

The project intends to improve the commuting experience, ease congestion and make room for higher subway ridership.

The construction has begun in December 2022 and is expected to be completed in the Q4 of 2024.
