The North Carolina Turnpike Authority and the North Carolina Department of Transportation have awarded a design and build contract for a six-lane divided highway to extend the Triangle Expressway from Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh to US 64/I-87 in North Carolina, USA.

The Triangle Expressway Southeast Extension project, valued at US$450 million, involves the addition of 6.6 miles of new highway and three new interchanges. This expansion builds upon Flatiron's existing NC-540 Raleigh Outer Loop projects, contributing to the ongoing development of the Triangle Expressway. In collaboration with joint-venture partner Fred Smith Company and lead designer ICE of the Carolinas, Flatiron will design and construct a six-lane divided highway extending from Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh to US 64/I-87. This marks Flatiron's third contract on the Triangle Expressway, and key project elements include:

  1. Establishment of new interchanges at Rock Quarry Road, Auburn Knightdale Road, and Poole Road.
  2. Construction of 19 new bridges, including approximately 1,600 feet of dual bridges spanning the Neuse River.
  3. Rehabilitation and widening of the existing I-540 bridge over I-87.
  4. Realignment of the existing Neuse River Trail.
