Transport for New South Wales has awarded the contract to CPB Contractors, UGL and Ghella for the design and construction of the M6 Stage 1 motorway project in Sydney, Australia. The Australian-Italian team was one of the three finalists in the tender.
The AUD2.52 billion (US$1.95 billion) project will connect President Avenue at Kogarah with the WestConnex M8 at Arncliffe via four-kilometer twin tunnels. The aim is to reduce journey times and congestion on surface roads. The project will include as well ramps between the main motorway tunnel and the surface intersection, tunnel stubs for a future connection to extend the M6, a new intersection at President Avenue, and new shared cyclist and pedestrian pathways.
The construction is planned to start in early 2022, creating more than 5,000 jobs. The project will be operational in 2025 and is expected to contribute to a 50% reduction in trucks on the Princes Highway north of President Avenue, returning local roads to the community.
