The Berlin-based architecture section of David Chipperfield Architects had won the competition for the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece.
The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is being upgraded to meet modern standards of quality, openness and sustainability. The project involves the design competition for a 20,000 sq m extension to Athens’ National Archaeological Museum, which houses prehistoric and ancient art. The new plinth of the existing building will be extended to the street, which add two floors of underground galleries. The construction of the extension provides approximately 20,000 sq m of additional space and a large green rooftop park. The extension will include the museum's ticket office, shop, restaurant, auditorium, and permanent and temporary exhibition space.
A proposal for the modernization of the museum was also developed with Wirtz International, Tombazis & Associate Architects, wh-p ingenieure, Werner Sobek and Atelier Brückner. The project will strengthen the Greek cultural offer for foreign visitors.
