Contract awarded for development of Gulhifalhu island in Maldives

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has awarded a contract to Boskalis for the development of Gulhifalhu island in Malé, Maldives.

Boskalis also executed the first phase in recent years. The scope of work for the second phase includes:

  • the improvement and development of the port infrastructure; 
  • climate adaptive solution to rising sea levels; 
  • deployment of a large trailing suction hopper dredger to reclaim new land using approximately 18 million cubic meters of sand;  
  • rock revetment work for shoreline protection; and
  • coral relocation and measures to limit the spreading of sediments in the water.

The contract was valued at approximately EUR120 million (US$131 million). For this project, a comprehensive environmental impact assessment was conducted to manage the environmental impacts of the dredging and land reclamation activities.
