The Jacksonville Port Authority (JaxPort) and preferred bidder SSA Marine have started construction works for the new SSA Jacksonville Container Terminal. The project includes the expansion of existing container terminal at Blount Island Marine Terminal in Jacksonville, Florida. The scope of works includes dredging a 17.70 km stretch of the St Johns River and deepening of the Jacksonville shipping channel to 47ft. It will enable the terminal to accommodate large container ships.
The investment for the project is around US$ 238.7 million. SSA Marine is also a 65% sponsor for landside improvements. US Department of Transportation has also funded US$ 20 million for improvements in the container terminal such as larger container docking.
The deepening project also includes the construction of vessel turning basin so larger ships visiting the terminal can turn at Blount Island.
