The Chilian Ministry of Public Works announced the reactivation of the construction of the Los Ríos-Los Lagos hospital network with the restart of the works on the Puerto Varas Hospital and the installation of the first stone from the Río Bueno Hospital.
The hospital network, which includes the La Unión and Río Bueno hospitals, will require a total investment of USD 288 million. The "Red Los Ríos-Los Lagos" concession involves replacing three hospitals in the Los Ríos region: one of low complexity in the commune of Los Lagos and two of medium complexity in the communes of La Unión and Río Bueno. Additionally, a medium-high complexity hospital will be established in the Puerto Varas commune. These hospitals will operate in a network, facilitating systematic collaboration to ensure uninterrupted care for users. The project encompasses the design, construction, and maintenance of new facilities, along with the provision, replacement, assembly, and maintenance of medical equipment and furniture. The three new hospitals include:
- The La Unión hospital, classified as medium-high complexity, will cover an estimated area of 59000 sq m, serving approximately 158,000 people, primarily from the communes of Puerto Varas, Llanquihue, Frutillar, Fresia, Puerto Montt (El Alerce sector), and Cochamó. With a capacity of 190 beds, it is expected to commence operations in the first half of 2028.
- The Río Bueno hospital, designated as a medium-complexity healthcare facility for the Los Lagos Region, will encompass an estimated area of 38000 sq m. It is designed to cater to nearly 60,000 people, predominantly from the communes of Río Bueno, Paillaco, and Lago Ranco. With a bed capacity of 120, the hospital is projected to commence operations in the first half of 2027.
- The Los Lagos Hospital, in conclusion, is expected to occupy an approximate area of 12000 sq m, facilitating the delivery of low-complexity healthcare to around 25,000 individuals, primarily from the communes of Los Lagos and Futrono. With a bed capacity of 36, the construction of this hospital is anticipated to be finalized in the first half of 2027.
