The Government of Queens has announced that a recently completed US$17 million traffic corridor in Rockaway, USA, has used porous concrete on the pavement to improve drainage.

The project involves the construction of a two-way bike lane, wider sidewalks, a bus stop, parking spaces, storm drains and 22 water pits in Rockaway, Queens, USA. The bike lane connects Beach Channel Drive to Shore Front Parkway. Approximately 11,000 sq ft of permeable concrete slabs were used in the construction process, allowing 1.3 million gallons of stormwater channeled through the concrete annually. Using such concrete will reduce the load on the sewer system, helping to reduce flooding in Jamaica Bay. The Department of Environmental Protection's stormwater regulations require the use of porous material for areas that discharge water into the city's sewers.

The project demonstrates Queens' commitment to keeping New Yorkers safer on the streets and more resilient to flooding.
