Australia has commenced the construction of the 36 MW thermal energy-from-waste (EfW) project in Kwinana, in the western region.
The power plant diverts 400,000 tonnes of household, commercial, and industrial waste from landfill each year which represents a quarter of Perth’s post-recycling rubbish. It uses the residual waste to generate energy, recover and recycle metals, and re-use the remaining ash residue as construction materials.
The AUD700 million (US$498.90 million) project is developed by Macquarie Capital (Australia) Ltd, Dutch Infrastructure Fund, and Phoenix Energy Australia Pty Ltd. It is backed by Australian Renewable Energy Agency with AUD23 million (US$16.22 million) financial grant and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation of up to AUD90 million (US$63.46 million) debt financing.
The construction contract is awarded to Acciona with the operation and maintenance service of up to 25 years awarded to Veolia. The project is expected to be operational by 2021.
