The Government of Ceará has authorized the construction of a seawater desalination plant in Fortaleza, Brazil. The project is implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP).
Located at Praia do Futuro, the plant will be connected by pipelines to deliver treated water to the Morro Santa Terezinha and Aldeota reservoirs. The project will have a water production capacity of 1 m³/s, which is estimated to increase the water supply by 12%. The desalination plant will benefit around 720 thousand people in the capital and its neighborhoods.
Águas de Fortaleza consortium is responsible for the construction, finance, operation and maintenance of the plant for a period of 30 years. The team is formed by Marquise S/A, PB Construções LTDA and Abengoa Água S/A. The consortium will make all the investments estimated at around BRL500 million (US$95.7 million). The project is expected to be operational in 2025.
